This was the first release available to system builders. The first major update was released in 2004 and was distributed by OEM manufacturer in Tier 1 which previously sold Windows XP Media Center Edition PC and was updated in 2005. The reset or reinstallation software is licensed for distribution only with new computers and can only be distributed with the computer for which it was originally distributed. These software packages are usually labeled with a phrase that includes for example only distribution with a new Dell computer.
Unlike other commercial digital video recorders Microsoft does not charge a monthly fee for Media Center TV Guide service.
